HOST A MOBILE PANTRY
Mobile pantries are Second Harvest of the Big Bend food distributions funded by grants and donations and are conducted jointly with one of our Agency Partners or Community Organizations located throughout our 11-county service area. These events often are located in a church or nonprofit’s parking lot at an announced date and time. Between 100 and 500 people will typically receive food distributions, including dry goods, fresh produce, and frozen meat.
Benefits of Mobile Pantries
Besides offering delivery flexibility, mobile pantries offer a quick and effective way to distribute food and maintain an atmosphere of dignity. A mobile pantry also serves some very specific needs:
Targets the underserved area, removing barriers to access and therefore expands capacity, builds the community and creates access.
Takes food directly to clients in a timely manner allowing a farmer’s market-style distribution encouraging greater interaction between volunteers and clients, allowing them to share recipes, family traditions and life experiences.
Provides the opportunity for religious and charitable organizations to partner with local governments, businesses, and universities to manage the distribution. A one-time distribution can develop into a long-term partnership of providing necessary services for the needy in the community.
